Experienced Online Maths and Science Tutor KS3/GCSE, Fully DBS Checked
Hello! My name is Avishan, I am a data engineer and Physics graduate and I am extremely passionate about everything mathematics related. I have achieved A* and A grades in mathematics throughout GCSE and A-Level, and I am also a capable and enthusiastic teacher of KS3/GCSE Science having attained A*/A grades in those subjects myself too. I have 9 years of teaching and tutoring experience, and have helped dozens of students excel in their exams. Please do not hesitate to contact me to discuss things further, such as availability, or if you have any questions!
Prior to starting my physics degree at university, I worked as a teaching assistant/tutor at a secondary school during my gap year. During my time teaching at a school, in addition to teaching students on an individual basis, I took on the responsibility of teaching small classes myself, and I was also a mentor to a group of Year 11 pupils, having helped them with GCSE revision every week. I continued tutoring whilst at university, as well as after graduating, as I love having the opportunity to show students how exciting learning can really be!
I usually tend to approach lessons by going through the background of the topic in focus and a few worked examples before giving students questions to answer themselves and going through worked solutions. Independent practice is a key part of becoming stronger in a subject, and the more a student practises, the better they will get, and this is a truly rewarding feeling. Throughout lessons, I work with a highly friendly, approachable and patient approach to tutoring, as it is vital to ensure that my students feel comfortable to ask questions on whatever topic they may have difficulties with. In addition, students should never be afraid to ask for further explanation if they do not understand a concept the first time around, as many concepts can be difficult to grasp initially and this is why it is so important to encourage students to ask questions whenever they feel like it. Furthermore, I aim to be as concise in my explanations as possible and I like to break down problems into manageable chunks. For example, I encourage students to underline keywords in questions and, particularly in maths and science, to draw diagrams to help them visualise problems. When it comes to exam technique I teach students precisely how to answer certain styles of question to score full marks and show as much working wherever possible. This is not only a very important skill to have to get good grades, but it will help them develop more of an understanding of the problems they are solving.
Testimonials: "I have engaged Avishan to support my Year 9 daughter who has been struggling with GCSE biology and physics (and not getting the support she needs from school, particularly during lockdown). Avishan has a calm confidence and it very patient. They're working remotely and it is going well; So well, that my daughter has also asked for maths tuition." "Avishan helped build my son's confidence and skill in physics, which is a subject he didn't particularly enjoy, and he ended up getting an A* in his mock. We are all so pleased with his progress and definitely recommend Avishan as a tutor" "Miss Avishan is a very enthusiastic tutor with positive reinforcement. She's patient and a good listener. She always encourages you to accomplish your work and make sure you understand the task. She's punctual and has never cancelled any of my sessions at the last minute. She's very respectful when it comes to time. Miss Avishan helped me to build self-confidence and strengthened my self-esteem when she shared her own experiences about what she has encountered in life. At the end of the sessions, I was looking forward to the next one."
