A focused and enthusiastic engineering student and private pilot
Hello! My name is Jack, and I'm an undergraduate studying mechanical engineering. I am currently in the final year of my degree, and have developed skills in a wide range of engineering disciplines. Engineering is a delightful subject - I have consistently scored above 70% in my final exams (First-Class), and have motivations to specialise in aerodynamics/flight dynamics as a postgraduate. Having only left school three years ago, I recognise that lessons can sometimes be a challenge, and it often takes a new individual to provide some understanding. I am motivated to to inspire the same curiosity that has driven my love of engineering. In my second year at university, I worked part-time as a GCSE science mentor, where I travelled to two local secondary schools throughout the week. I have an open and friendly approach to lesson delivery, and I am willing to tutor GCSE and A-Level students. I aim to make my lessons interactive an enjoyable, in a non-oppressive environment, and to ensure that the student is at ease during the lesson. I also like to use real life application of theory, giving the student every opportunity to ask questions. Outside of university, I have ambitions to become a pilot, with aviation being an interest since my early years. Since the age of 12, I have been flying regularly in gliders and powered aircraft, having recently received my Private Pilot Licence (PPL).
- I worked as a part-time science mentor, during my second year at university. This involved travelling to two local secondary schools during the week, where I provided mentoring to GCSE science students - I also involved parts of the A-Level syllabus, as well as talking about my own studies at university. - For seven years I volunteered as an instructor cadet at my local Air Cadet Squadron. I taught a variety of subjects from an aviation/engineering orientated syllabus, including principles of flight, basic aerodynamics, basic mechanics, aircraft systems & design, and airmanship.
- I am flexible with lesson planning, and can use a range of teaching styles typically using presentations, tutorials and practice questions. I always like to ensure that the lessons are 'tailored' toward the student, and that the lessons address their areas of concern or interest. I hope to gain a better understanding of each student during our first meeting.
- I am familiar with exam paper structure and marking schemes (OCR, AQA, Edexcel).
- I have seen great improvements in academic attainment within past students. Within my work as an air cadet instructor and GCSE mentor, I have seen the confidence of students grow considerably as a result of tutoring sessions.
