Hello, I teach GCSE, A level English language and literature. I have an MA from Central School of Speech and Drama and a BA Hons from Birmingham University in English literature. I have over 18 years of experience teaching A level, GCSE English, as well as graduate exams, and Cambridge and IELTS exams. I lived and taught English in Paris, France, then I moved to Seoul, South Korea, where I taught English in schools to all ages. Now, back in UK, where I grew up, I live with my family and teach online and in person. I love the challenge of teaching and meeting new people. I am particularly interested in fiction and writing, and enjoy going to the theatre and the cinema. I have an up-to-date enhanced DBS check.
I have worked as a freelance teacher for over 18 years. In that time I have done the following: Guided students through GCSE and A level exams Taught creative writing to all ages Worked in language schools to teach general English and exams such as TOEIC. Taught English in schools in South Korea One-to-one lessons with students of ages 16 to adult online and in person Helped with essay planning and proofreading I believe that every student is different and I plan individual courses for them. Each lesson is tailored to the student’s needs. Easy to use exam techniques, methods to gain the most marks, ways to prepare for language and literature, guides to using context, specific words to use to up your grade, how much to write, how many quotes, essay structure plans, effective planning, key ideas to use for literature texts. Each lesson starts with a guide for the question, going through key points and strategy, then some practise to really hone the writing skills and precise language needed for a high level answer. I give positive feedback and suggestions to improve. I am passionate about the history of English literature, specifically Elizabethan poetry and drama, and the 19th century Gothic, Romantic and Realism. I am highly knowledge about the form of poetry from sonnets to free verse, and can explain and guide students in form and structures, which is guaranteed to raise grades
I plan each lesson depending on the student’s needs. For GCSE and higher I will focus on a key aspect per lesson, for example: a theme from Shakespeare, a character; comparing two poems; examining a non-fiction text. I will give specific advice for the question, then let the student practice a sample answer and I will give feedback. I suggest specific phrases to explain and link points, paragraph structure, key words to use, how to plan for the question and show how examiners mark the questions.
I am experienced in teaching AQA, Edexcel, Eduqas, WJEC, IGCSE, OCR for A level and GCSE. IB standard for English The Scottish higher exams
