Hi there, I’m Paul — a secondary school English teacher with three years of classroom experience and two years of prior tutoring experience, passionate about helping students grow in confidence, critical thinking, and exam success. GCSE English Language and Literature + A Level English Literature.
As mentioned in my tagline, I hold a degree in Drama & English Literature (BA Hons) as well as a PGCE from the University of Manchester, which has equipped me with the knowledge and practical skills needed to teach English effectively in both classroom and one-to-one settings. English is a genuine passion of mine because it allows us to explore ideas, perspectives, and emotions that deepen our understanding of both the world and ourselves. I believe every student can develop strong analytical and communication skills with the right guidance and encouragement. My teaching style focuses on building confidence, improving clarity of expression, and helping students engage meaningfully with literature and language.
I have two years of tutoring experience alongside my teaching career, working with students across a range of abilities and age groups. I have supported students with: GCSE English Language and Literature Essay writing and analytical skills Reading comprehension and textual analysis Creative writing Exam preparation and revision strategies My experience in schools has also helped me understand the pressures students face in exam settings, allowing me to tailor lessons to individual needs while building both confidence and academic performance.
I structure my lessons around the individual needs and goals of each student. During the first lesson, I usually carry out an informal assessment to identify strengths, areas for development, and learning preferences. This helps me create a personalised learning plan that targets specific objectives. My lessons typically include: Clear learning objectives Guided analysis and discussion Modelled examples and practice questions Exam technique where appropriate Constructive feedback throughout the session I regularly prepare lesson materials and tailored resources in advance, and I also set optional homework or independent tasks to reinforce learning between sessions. I believe consistency and active practice are key to making strong progress in English.
I am familiar with the main UK exam boards, including: AQA Edexcel OCR Through my classroom teaching and tutoring experience, I understand the assessment objectives, mark schemes, and expectations required for success in GCSE English Language and Literature examinations. AQA would definitely be a particular strength as I have received several seminars with AQA on how best support students studying for AQA English examinations.
I have helped students improve their confidence, essay structure, analytical writing, and exam technique, leading to noticeable improvements in both attainment and classroom engagement. Many students I’ve worked with have developed greater confidence in approaching unseen texts, structuring responses effectively, and expressing their ideas clearly under exam conditions.
