Skilled Primary School Teacher with an English and Maths focus
I have been training to teach for almost a year and will receive my qualifications in July (2021). I am an academic with a first class degree and a passion for learning. I have worked with a range pupils, from those who have profound learning needs, to those who are over achieving and need support with pushing themselves further. I understand that school is not a one-size-fits-all environment. I can sense, quickly, what sort of intervention a pupil needs and understand how to set specific targets and goals and achieve them. I am approachable and caring, and pupils are often keen to impress me.
I am new to tutoring, but have had a lot of experience working one-on-one with pupils. My ability understand pupils as unique learners and tailor my lessons to those learning needs has been evaluated as outstanding. I thrive off helping young people to enjoy their learning, and as a result achieve their goals. I am organised, creative and diverse and this makes me a fantastic tutor.
During the first session with the pupil, I will try to gauge what sort of learner they are so that I can plan my lessons accordingly. For example, for a pupil who is not at their expected level and struggles to focus during school time, lessons will be interactive using lots of dialogic, back and forth discussion and reasoning and real life examples. I like to try and build on pupils prior knowledge so that they can engage and feel connected to what they are being taught. For pupils who may be working at a higher level, I will focus on making sure that learning is thoroughly consolidated and applied using a lot of different types of examples. We will experiment with timing, methods and approaches to learning to try and ensure that your child is doing things in a way that works for them. In terms of structure of a normal lesson, although each will be different depending on the learner style and the topic, I will use online quiz platforms, power-points and videos as well as showing real life examples of written methods using my hands and a pen and paper as I believe this is important. Lessons will consist of re-consolidation of previous learning, a taught section, time for us to work through examples together, and time for the pupil to work independently but with my guidance if required.
I am, of course, completely familiar with the requirements of the national curriculum and this is a starting point for all my long term lesson plans. As a training teacher, and through teaching unions, I have full access to current information regarding exams. I am experienced in the assessment of termly exams in school at the moment and so have an updated knowledge of what is required.
Although I haven’t yet worked with the same pupils for a full school year, I have already seen progress in pupils with who I have worked with for 6-8 weeks. As pupils are generally keen to impress me, I find that they want to do extra work whether it is at home or during school, and this is something I encourage and welcome. Through increased practice, pupils attain higher and as a result enjoy learning more; this is a cycle which allows pupils to achieve their goals.
