I currently work at a selective Grammar school teaching GCSE, A level and Further Maths. I have worked as a private tutor since qualifying as a teacher and am very experienced when it comes to helping students achieve their goals in Maths. One of my tutees scored 880/900 in the Quantitative Reasoning section of his UCAT medicine entrance exam, achieved a 7 in his IB exams and is currently studying medicine at Oxford University.
I first tutored when studying for my PGCE, and have tutored ever since. I build students' confidence in Maths at the same time as working on their weaknesses.
I carry out an informal assessment during the first session which can be achieved by getting to know the student and asking a few questions to identify their confidence levels. Once we've established their likes/dislikes, we can then work on areas that need strengthening. I try to anticipate where a student might have problems so that they can grow to love the areas they find challenging. Algebra is an area of maths that many pupils struggle with, but I have found that as they develop an aptitude for the topic, they quickly begin to enjoy it.
I am an Edexcel/AQA A level maths and Further Maths Examiner. I am able to give pupils detailed advice on how to achieve the maximum marks per question. I have 5 years experience as a GCSE Examiner.
One of my tutees scored a 9 in his IGCSE maths exam, 880/900 in the Quantitative Reasoning section of his entrance to medicine exam (UCAT), a 7 in IB and is now in his fifth year studying medicine at Oxford. A different tutee - who was working at grade 6 when I took her on - achieved a 9 in her IGCSE maths exam and an A in further maths. She went on to achieve an A in A level maths and secured a place to study medicine at Bristol university.
