I have tutored A level Maths ,Further Maths ,GCSE, IGCSE and KS3 for more than 18 years. More recently I have worked with the new Higher Application of Maths syllabus.Prior to that I was an international management consultant.
I tutor KS3, GCSE, IGCSE and A level Maths, exclusively online, and find that it works very well. Lessons are interactive, using an interactive whiteboard, and I am able to build a good relationship with students, and make our lessons engaging and fun. A particular online advantage is that if you get stuck with a question or issue, you do not have to wait till the next meeting. We can sort it out very quickly online, within a few minutes.. I have 2 degrees, an MBA and an Honours in mathematics and it is mathematics that I am focussing on tutoring.
Initially I tutored A level but as tutees had younger siblings and friends I now also do GCSE and IGCSE with some KS3. Online tutoring is tricky for younger children unless they are very focused. I do have 2 Yr 7 children at the moment but I think Yr 9 is a better year to start. Most of my tutees attend schools / colleges and need assistance alongside the traditional academic environment. But I also teach home schooled students when I am their only maths teacher and I do crash revision courses.
In the first session I make sure I find out what you want to focus on. It could be a topic from earlier that you have struggled with or you may want support on what you are learning at school/college at the moment. For the next session, we might go through a new topic from scratch, or we might do more complex questions on a topic that you have already almost mastered or we might ……., it depends on what you need. The plan is that you are able to do past exam papers well ahead of time and do the absolute best that you can. If you are younger, the plan is the same but it is internal tests, not exams that you need to become familiar with.
At A level I have experience with the exam boards of Edexcel, AQA, OCR, OCR MEI and IB. Although since the syllabus has been restructured a few years ago, almost all my tutees are Edexcel. In Scotland I mainly have experience withe Application of Mathematics. For KS3 and GCSE I have worked on Edexcel and AQA. For IGCSE it has been Edexcel and Cambridge.
All my students have met or exceeded their desired outcomes. 80% of my current students have either been from recommendations from a school’s Head of Maths, younger siblings or their family friends.
