A dedicated GCSE and A-level science tutor, who is passionate about breaking down tricky concepts striving towards student confidence in their scientific understanding
Hello there! My name is Kezia and I'm a second year biomedical science student, who has hands on tutoring experience in one to one online and group settings. I've worked for a private tutoring company as well as being self employed, in these roles I've tutored GCSE science throughout the academic year as well as intensive sessions. I specialise in simplifying complex concepts so my students thoroughly understand the foundations of their subject. I truly believe that no student is 'bad at science' rather they haven't had the opportunity to have these concepts explained to them in the right way. I am very patient, my sessions are always clear and easy to grasp, focused on building knowledge, exam technique and confidence all at the same time. My first year in tutoring allowed me to become strong and result driven whilst maintaining and prioritising the comfort of my tutees, I was able to work on creating a strong support system with my students which allowed them to communicate their weaknesses and strengths which helped achieve an effective study plan.
I've tutored a range from year 4 to GCSE as well as regular A-level peer support sessions in both online and in-person environments. The process of identifying my students needs was something I was passionate about during my tutoring journey, as I was once a student who struggled to switch on and learn for hours at a time like some of my peers. Most recently, I've supported students who were often working below their target grades and lacked confidence especially in science. I know from first hand experience how this affects self esteem, but with my weekly sessions and with personalised support my students went from struggling with basics to achieving their potential. I'm used to explaining topics in various ways until they click and experimenting between various methods (e.g pomodoro technique, task based scheduling, active recall, spaced repetition with different time intervals) I settle on a method which allows to have an enjoyable learning experience whilst getting dream marks. I also give regular tailored feedback to my students and their parents so everyone is caught in the loop. I make sure to always be encouraging and patient especially if a student feels they are behind, ensuring every session is moving them in a positive direction.
In the first session I get to know how my student learns best, and where their confidence lies and where there are any gaps. I do an informal assessment and build a plan tailored to them, my lessons are structured around the student's curriculum as well as any personal academic struggles. I always use clear learning objectives, and like to use regular mini exam style tests, these are always a mix of trickier questions as well as easier questions to be able to find gaps in knowledge. We ensure to co-mark the test so that the student can understand their learning. I always prepare my lesson plans and resources in advance with things becoming more stricter around exam season but i do communicate this to my student making sure they feel comfortable throughout. Homework is set based on any difficult concepts or questions, usually exam questions, short recall tasks or revision activities providing detailed feedback after each session to easily track progress.

I am familiar with all major exam boards particularly GCSE Biology, Chemistry and Physics AQA, and A-level Biology OCR A as well as A-level Chemistry AQA, I make sure students understand what the mark schemes are looking for integrating past papers into our sessions so that they are confident in technique and content.
The GCSE science student I worked was underperforming at a grade 2, my sessions with them helped reach them to a solid grade 4 (foundation level science) additionally bringing up their academic confidence and exam technique, feedback from parents has always been consistently highlighting my patience, easy to understand lessons and how motivated their child was after their sessions with me.
