I have experience tutoring English and tutor KS1 KS2 KS3 GCSE and also N4 and N5 English Language and English Literature. I am currently studying a Law degree.
My teaching style adapts depending on who I am tutoring. However generally I will ask the student what they think their strengths and weaknesses are. Then I will design tasks to help improve what they feel least confident with, whilst encouraging other skills where appropriate. The most important part of the process is that the student feels comfortable to ask me questions, so I plan regular intervals where we will discuss the topic- to make sure they understand it.
I have been tutoring for almost 3 years now and so far I have only tutored students aged 15-16. Therefore I have mostly tutored students to prepare for their GCSEs. This included tutoring more than one child simultaneously. I am confident to teach N4 and N5 English Literature. I have also tutored a child in primary school previously for a few months. In terms of my personal experience, it has been nothing but pleasant. I really enjoy being about to teach students english, as I really enjoy the topic. It is always exciting when a student understands a topic that you have helped them understand. The experience really helps me feel like I am making a difference.
I will start the lesson with a recap and short quiz on certain terminology. Then I will commence the main lesson, which can be very interactive or independent- depending on what method the student responds to best. Afterwards there will be a recap and it is a chance to go over anything they have misunderstood. Before the end, I will also ask them if they have any requests for the next lesson.
I volunteer and I have experience with tutoring based on the AQA exam board. It has helped me realise the important of ensuring that the students understand the different assessment objectives and helping them understand how to achieve the best result according to the exam board.
